Upper Mustang Trek

Upper Mustang Trek belongs to one of the protected area trek in Nepal. The whole area of Mustang is also called “District beyond mountains” and receives very low rainfall. The terrain of Upper Mustang closely resembles the terrain of high land Tibet. The city of Upper Mustang was built in 1380 AD by the first King of Lo Ame Pal. The Mustang region covered 2,600 sq km area of land and is populated by about 6000 people. The walled city still stands as a testimony of Lo-Manthang’s with its prosperity and rich cultural heritage. The Upper Mustang trek takes you to one of the protected trekking destinations in Nepal. It was opened to trekkers in 1992.

Day 1
Kathmandu to Pokhara (950m): Upper Mustang Trek starts from Kathmandu. Driving about 7 hours by tourist coach or 30 minutes flight on extra cost. Overnight at 3 star hotel.
Day 2
Pokhara to Tikhedhunga (1577m): Approximately an hour and half drive by car to Birethanti and trek continues 5hrs /6Km to Tikhedhunga. Night stay at guest house.
Day 3
Tirkhedhunga to Ghorepani (2855m): Trek about 6hrs /5Km. Enjoy waterfalls, flora-fauna many species of birds animals, Rhododendron forest (Nepalese national flower) along the way. Night stay at the guest house.
Day 4
Ghorepani to Tatopani (1189m): Early morning visit to Poonhill for sunrise and stunning view of the Himalayas including 6th and 8th highest mountain Dhaulagiri and Annapurna first. Trek continues about 6 hrs /17Km to Tadapani.
Day 5
Tatopani to Jomsom(2720m): No Trekking on this day because we will take a Jeep ride. Drive about 4 hours /43Km.
Day 6
Jomsom To Kagbeni (2840m): Trek about 2 hours 9Km. overnight stay in lodge.
Day 7
Kagbeni to Chele (3050m): Trek about 5 to 6 hours along the river valley of Kaligandaki. Overnight stay at lodge.
Day 8
Chele to Syanbochen (3475m): Trek about 6 to 7 hours climbing over Taklam La Pass (3,624m) with view of Tilicho Peak, Yakawa Kang, Nilgiri and Damodar Danda. Overnight stay in lodge.
Day 9
Syanbochen to Ghaymi (3520m): Trek about 5 to 6 hours crossing over the Yamda La (3,850m) and Nyi Pass (4,010m) with wonderful landscape vista. Overnight stay in lodge.
Day 10
Ghaymi to Charang (3500m): Trek about 4 to 5 hours with exotic scenery of Himalaya and landscape; overnight stay at lodge.
Day 11
Charang to Lo-Mangthang (3850m): Trek about 5 to 6 hours. This is the day we reach our destination Lo-Mangthang with a majestic view of Nilgiri, Tilicho, Annapurna I and Bhrikuti peak along the trail; overnight stay in lodge.
Day 12
Exploration day in Lo-Mangthang: As Lo Mangthang is our dream destination of Upper Mustang trek, we will spend a day exploring this majestic place. The main attraction of Lo Mangthang includes Namgyal Gomba situates on a hilltop, settlement of local community hike up to Tingkhar village, of around 40 houses, we may visit the Tall Champa Lakhang “God house” the red Thugchen Gomba, Chyodi Gomba. Beside this we may visit the four story palace where the former King of Lo Mangthang resides. There are plenty other interesting place to explore while you are at Lo Mangthang.
Day 13
Lo-Mangthang to Ghar Gompa: Trek about 4 to 5 hours this is the day we start our returning trip after unforgettable time in Lo-Mangthang. Overnight stay in lodge.
Day 14
Ghar Gompa to Ghiling (3806m): Trek about 5 to 6 hours with picturesque view of the area; overnight stay in lodge.
Day 15
Ghiling to Chele (3050): Trek about 5 to 6 hours, same way back to Chele with same trail and views; overnight stay in lodge.
Day 16
Chele to Jomsom (2710m): Trek about 6 to 7 hours, this is the last day of trek. ) Overnight stay in lodge.
Day 17
Jomsom to Pokhara (950m): A pleasant and scenic flight for 20 minutes. Flight takes off in morning so, we will have plenty of time to explore Pokhara city. 3 stars categories accommodation at Pokhara.
Day 18
Drive back to Kathmandu: Driving about 7 hours by Tourist coach or 30 minutes flight by paying extra.

Upper Mustang is located in the northwestern part of Nepal and closely resembles to terrain of Tibetan plateau and people here directly came from Tibet for settlement. The Upper Mustang trek area has long been inhabited by the Tibetan Buddhists with their rich Tibetan culture and heritage. The main attraction of Mustang trekking is the wall caves and Royal Palace of the former King. The villages are made up of a cluster of camps such as: Samba Camp, Dhabi Camp, Main Head Camp and Kesang Camp.

The gateway city of Upper Mustang Trek is Pokhara. You can enters to Mustang by 20 minutes pleasant and scenic flight to Jomsom or trek all the way via Ghorepani through the Annapurna conservation area crossing by world deepest gorge and Holy river bank of Kaligandaki all the way up to entry point of upper Mustang called Kagbeni. Please note that we could drive all the way to Kabeni at the moment through bumpy and rough road. Trekking in Mustang takes you through several passes, the highest one being Nyi La (3990m). Our final destination is fabulous walled caved capital of Lo Manthang. We will have a chance to explore the thousand year old monastery, caves, local tribes and scenic beauties. Trekking in Mustang is truly one of the rarest and most rewarding experiences to your holiday trip in Nepal.
